About NISER

  NISER, established by the Department of Atomic Energy, strives to become a citadel for basic sciences and allied subjects in terms of teaching and research. Its vision includes imparting high-quality science education in a vibrant academic ambience to the bright, motivated students, by a faculty of distinguished scientists and teachers. The curriculum is amply supported by a strong visitor’s programme by accomplished scientists from India and abroad.

NISER offers a 5 year integrated M.Sc. programme in Biological, Chemical, Mathematical and Physical sciences. NISER functions from its own campus at Jatni. Degrees at NISER will be awarded by the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a deemed-to-be University within the Department of Atomic Energy.

There are 200 seats for 2020 batch, including reserved seats for SC/ST/OBC/Divyangjan candidates as per Government norms. If offered admission under the OBC-NCL category, candidate must produce the relevant certificate on the date of admission, valid on that date.   • Registration / Online application opens : January 08, 2020 (2:30 pm)
  • Online application closes : April 3, 2020 (midnight) [First Friday of April]
  • Download of admit card starts : April 24, 2020, 6:30 pm
  • Date of examination : June 06, 2020 (Saturday), Session-I: 9:00 am – 12:30 pm, Session-II: 2:00 pm – 5:30 pm [First Saturday of June]
  • Announcement of results on NEST website : June 16, 2020 [Third Tuesday of June]
  • First Counselling of NISER Bhubaneswar : To be Announced
  • First Counselling of CEBS Mumbai : To be Announced
  • Eligibility criteria for admission
  • Candidates must qualify all foureligibility criteria listed below:

    Candidates in General and OBC category should be born on or after August 01, 2000. The age limit is relaxed by 5 years for SC/ ST/ Divyangjan candidates.
    Class XII qualifying examination should be passed in either 2018 or 2019. Candidates appearing in 2020 are also eligible. (Where only Letter Grade is given by the Board, a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent percentage marks will be required. In the absence of such a certificate the decision of the respective Admission Committees will be final.)
    At least 60% marks in aggregate (or equivalent grade) in Class XII (or equivalent) examination from any recognized Board in India. For Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates and for Divyangjan candidates, the minimum requirement is 55%.
    Candidate should secure a position in the NEST merit list.

NATIONAL ENTRANCE SCREENING TEST (NEST – 2017)

 NEST 2017

The National Entrance Screening Test or NEST is a compulsory test for admission to the 5–year Integrated MSc programme in basic sciences – Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics – at National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar and University of Mumbai – Department of Atomic Energy Center for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM–DAE CEBS), Mumbai. Both NISER and CEBS are autonomous institutions established by Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India, in 2007. NISER is an off–campus centre of Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) and all academic programmes of NISER are affiliated to HBNI. These institutes have started with the mandate to provide high quality teaching in basic sciences by a faculty of distinguished scientists embedded in a vibrant research environment and to create a national pool of scientists ready to take up research challenges in the frontiers of basic and applied sciences. The Integrated MSc programme at these institutes follows a semester–based course structure and continuous assessment within a flexible and innovative academic curriculum, exposing the students to research early in their programme. The placements of the graduated students from NISER and CEBS provide testimony of success to this initiative. NISER and CEBS are both residential institute equipped with state of art teaching and research laboratories, modern computational facilities, computer centres and excellent libraries. All the students are accommodated in on–campus hostels, for both girls and boys, and are provided with an environment conducive to science education and research. The 5–year integrated MSc programme at NISER and CEBS offers a limited number of merit based INSPIRE (by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India) scholarships of ₹5,000/– per month and an additional ₹20,000/– per year for carrying out summer projects. For the students entered into the MSc programme through NEST–2016 the numbers of such scholarships were 60 for NISER and 25 for CEBS. Besides, top performers at NISER and CEBS, securing overall grades above certain threshold at the end of the programme, are eligible to appear directly for the interview for admission to Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) training school.
